Wet n Wild has come out with the loveliest of cruelty-free brushes. The cult USA based cosmetic label is known for high-performance, budget priced beauty products. What you may not know is that Wet n Wild is also dedicated to vegan, cruelty-free beauty. Their gorgeous brushes are ergonomic, pretty and most importantly, not made out of animal fur.
I used to think that the best professional brushes were pony, goat, sable, and squirrel. They held their shape, they were more expensive and I believed the hype. But, as a vegetarian and an advocate for animals rights I started to look into the way the fur was “harvested” (Ii even hate the word – it implies that the animal is like plant). Most animal brushes were made in China, where animal rights laws are not enforced in the same way as in Western countries, so alarm bells went off for me right there. I even released a brush set, with the two fluffy brushes (blush and shadow), made of pony. I feel bad now. I should have asked more questions. I should have done my research.
Goats, badgers, squirrels, minks, and ponies all donate their hair (not by choice) to make cosmetic brushes. The prized mink and sable brushes use fur obtained from the fur industry. The method that is used to trap and kill these poor animals is by gassing or electrocuting them to avoid damaging the hair.
I have worked in a cosmetics company, some years back now, and they claimed the brushes were sable and the animals were “shaved humanely”. This was simply not true – they had not idea really. To make fur brushes, the animals are killed (hopefully) and skinned as part of the fur trade. In the place I worked, the “sable or pony” was actually “weasel” and the tags that said so were ripped off in the downstairs warehouse. It was a complete lie and everyone knew it.
There is no such thing as cruelty-free brushes made from animal fur. I found some horrendous images that I simply don’t want to post on my blog, but just Google “Fur trade farming”. It will disgust and break your heart. Most companies that use fur in their brushes get the fur from countries with less than kind animal rights practices. If you want to be kind to animals and get cruelty-free brushes, buy synthetic brushes. There is a range of companies that have them and it is becoming more and more popular to offer synthetic brushes.

Beauty is more than skin deep, and applying your makeup with the fur of a slaughtered animal is not the way I’d want to start my day.
