A home should feel like yours the moment you walk through the door. Not just tidy or well-designed but something that is personal to you lived in and filled with things that reflect your taste. But, this is something that many of us struggle with. We don’t have any interior design qualifications and we don’t know how to move from generic decor to something that is a bit less safe or a bit less trendy and a bit more personality-filled, right?
If that sounds like you, then check out some of my ideas to help you inject more personality into your home below. Use them as a springboard for creating spaces that you love and that are unique to you.
Start with what you love
The easiest way to add personality is to focus on things you genuinely like. This could be colors, textures, artwork, or even certain styles. Instead of worrying about whether something is “on trend,” ask yourself if it feels right for you.
When your home reflects your preferences, it naturally feels more authentic and comfortable.
Mix old and new
A space that feels too perfect often ends up feeling a bit impersonal too, so it is often a good idea to mix newer items with older pieces so that you have that contrast and character. Vintage furniture in a modern home or lots of antique furniture in a room with a super-modern piece of art can both work well depending on your taste.
The contrast of old and new just creates a bit more depth and makes your space feel more exciting.
Use statement features
Adding one or two standout features can give a room a strong sense of identity.
This might be a bold piece of furniture, a feature wall, or something architectural. For example, installing external barn doors can add both character and practicality. They create a distinct look while also serving a functional purpose, making them a great addition to certain spaces. Statement elements help anchor the room and give it a focal point.
Layer textures and materials
Personality in the home often comes through in the details and one of the best ways to ensure there are lots of interesting details in your home is to layer lots of different textures like soft fabrics, wood, metal and natural materials in the one space. This just makes the home feel much richer and much more inviting.
You can keep it simple by just adding a rug to a wooden floor or more cushions to a bench – it doesn’t have to be a big project – and it will have a much bigger impact than you might think.
Basically, it’s about creating a space that feels comfortable as well as visually appealing.
Display personal items
Your home should tell your story. Photos, books, travel souvenirs, or items connected to your hobbies all add a personal touch. These details make your space unique and give it meaning beyond decoration. The key is to display them in a way that feels intentional rather than cluttered.
Here’s to a home that’s overflowing with personality!
