Probably the most expensive and challenging parts of setting up a mobile makeup artist business is putting together a cover-all-bases professional Makeup artist kit, that caters to any look, occasions, ethnicity, taste and skin tone. I am fortunate that I am already a beauty blogger as I have a tonne of makeup already, but I need it to be the right makeup, with no double ups, portable. I need palettes, sets so I can simply pull out one bag or palette and not a million individual items to create a look.
Makeup case
Apart from holding all your products, you make up case shows the clients your level of professionalism. I used to have a huge one on wheels but it was total overkill and would get hammered when I flew, and I only used about 1/4 of what I had in the case. I’ve now opted for a small case, like the one above from Sephora, but I need another small bag for brushes and airbrush kit. I will upgrade soon to the one below:
Makeup Tools
The foundation of the kit are your tools. Being an airbrush specialist using the Velbella system, I have a very portable kit, but need to top up my foundations.
I also need to decide on a brush collection. I am very pedantic and want a set that matches. I’m also wanting rose gold and a set that is cruelty free.
- Complete brush set (2 large powder, highlighter, contour, blush, big crease brush, small crease brush, blending brush, liner brush, large flat eye shadow brush, small shadow brush, concealer brush, beauty sponge, powder puff, fan brush, lip brush, spooly, brow brush ).

- Self contained pencil sharpener (I have a Milani one as it collects the shavings)
- Lash Curler (I have a pretty rose gold one)
- Brush cleaner (I use Isocol rubbing alcohol in a Sephora bottle)
- Face cleanser (Avene is the gentlest and won’t react with anyone, and use a warm face washer to remove – I keep a few face washers, white and pink, in my kit)
- Disposable wands for mascara
- Disposable liner brushes (or a synthetic brush you can clean between faces)
- Eyelash application tool (it’s like a pair of tweezers, just shaped a little differently
- Makeup remover pads and cotton buds
- Tissues (put in a couple of portable packs for your weddings)
Makeup Bases
- Simple and non-irritating day cream (I like Sukin’s for this)
- Foundation (cool, warm and neutral shadows from light to dark)
- Concealer (light medium and dark, plus colour correction palette)
- Powder (pressed and loose translucent, plus some darker tones)
- Blush Palette (cool and warm tones)
- Highlighter/Contour Palette (cool and warm tones)

Final Tips
Don’t be talked into buying the most expensive items. A professional Makeup artist kit doesn’t need labels.Be creative with your palettes.
It needs research, quality products and in many cases that’s not the expensive design items. It is however a perception of clients that the better the labels the better the artist, so I always throw ing some key high end items that satisfies that, like a fancy palette that I bought after Christmas from Sephora. In many cases the chemist dupes are as good. It’s not about the names on the palettes, but the artistry of the creator, the performance of the products. For example, my favourite foundations are the L’Oreal Paris ones, True Match and Glam Beige. Both are from Priceline (or Ulta in the USA). Just do your research before you buy, swatch and try colours and blendability and don’t let anyone talk you into spending more than you’ve budgeted. You can replace your Maybelline with La Prairie when you are more established. Just do an incredible job, make the client feel special and the reviews will come flying in, and so will your bookings.
