As I sit on the ferry, I gaze up at some of the wonderful heritage, federation style homes that are peppered between the more modern mansions and unit blocks. I spied this amazing building and at first I thought it was just one huge Federation home. I looked a little closer and did a bit of research. “Monterey”, as it is known, is made up of a block of 5 over 3 stories.
I currently live in heritage unit home in Mosman, although our home doesn’t command such an impressive view or presence from the ferry and isn’t as luxurious. I love our open wood fireplace, large-scale rooms, floor boards, high ceiling and exposed wood. The Federation home is a symbol of Australia’s identity. Build at the turn of the century, these homes are seen in the more established suburbs of Sydney, such as the Lower North Shore, including Mosman, Cremorne, Neutral Bay, Manly and North Sydney to name a few.

“The Monterey” was designed and built in the early 1900s as a private waterside residence and guesthouse. It fell into dereliction, Falling into dereliction, the Federation homes were completely restored and turned into a restaurant and residence. It was eventually converted into 5 luxury strata apartments in the 1980s.
The block is, of course, heritage listed. In the renovation the original Queen Anne Federation features were restored, bringing back the magnificent character features through the entire building.
Apartment 5 is one of larger of the 3 bedroom apartments. It is a very spacious, unique and beautifully presented home and set over 2 levels on the top of the block.
In 2015, Unit 5 sold for $2,050,000, with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 cars spaces. Because of the unique qualities of such a home, it will always hold and increase it’s value. The views are amazing, the floor plan original.
