It’s one thing for the air to be hot and humid, and make the inside of your home feel almost as bad as the heat swirling around outside. It’s another for your home to be so south facing. and so exposed, that the sun bakes your house throughout the day as well!
And when you’re dealing with both at once, you’re going to feel like there’s nothing you can do to actually try and be comfortable during the summer heat! You might as well just go and roast in the garden, for all the difference it makes!
However, while it’s hard to make the air cooler without a proper AC unit installed, you can stop the bake as it’s happening and let your indoor air feel a bit more temperate as the season goes on. Here’s how.
Block the Rays with Foliage
If there’s one way you can stop the sun from getting to your home, it’s by putting something tall and green in the way!
You can very much ‘block’ sunshine from reaching too far into your windows and settling into your walls by putting trees and tall hedges outside your house.
Make sure they’re planted in an area where the sun coverage tends to extend all day long, and try to ensure you cover both the top and bottom floors of your home.
And remember, this is a long term sun protection option, as the saplings will need time to grow out. So next summer is likely to be a lot more comfortable! But for the time being, you need to look into something else!
Tint Your Windows
Did you know it was possible to get UV film fitted onto your home’s windows? This blocks the sun’s rays from getting any further than the external window itself, and prevents the heat from penetrating into your home at these thinner points.
It’s also a bit easier to manage than fitting shutters onto each window, or an awning above the windows on the second floor!
And when you combine window tinting with a proper level of internal insulation, you’re going to feel much more temperate when you’ve got the windows and doors sealed shut while the sun is blaring away outside.
After all, there will be far less external heat to combat, and that’ll help your home feel cooler for longer.
Only Open Up at Night
Finally, never leave your windows open during the day when it’s hot out. Remember, the sun is constantly warming up the air out there, and you don’t want too much of that coming inside when it’s prime heat time!
Keep the windows closed, create your own flow of air with fans or an AC, and then open the windows when the sun has gone down and the natural, fresh air is cooler.
If your home tends to bake during the summer time, you can stop the sun from causing too much of an overheat using the tips and tricks above.
