Adding the right lighting is a great way to elevate just about any space in your home. If you’re looking to do this but you’re feeling a bit confused about exactly what you should do there are a few things you need to keep on the forefront of your thoughts to make sure that you are making the right decisions at all times.

Lighting is a big deal and you want to make sure you get it right so that you can make your space more luxurious.

Here are some of the major things you need to bear in mind when you’re choosing lighting for any space in your home.

What Is the Space Used For?

One of the first things you’re going to need to consider is what the space is used for. Different rooms in your home have different purposes.

The lighting needs to support the activities that take place in the room. For example, you’re going to need lights for workspaces in your kitchen whereas you may not need these for your living room, or bedroom.

For these spaces, you need softer lighting than you would in a kitchen.

Layer Up Your Lights

One of the things you can do to make sure that your lighting scheme is well-balanced is to ensure that you are layering your lights. What this means is that you are going to put in different types of lights throughout the room.

For example, you can try ambient lighting along with task lighting and accent lighting as well.

Don’t leave natural lighting out of the equation you want to make sure that you are optimizing for this as well. Whenever possible use the right window treatments or even expand or change your windows if you can afford to. Let the light in!

With all these talks of lights, you want to make sure that your home is prepared for these changes. If you feel that your wiring is not quite right you may want to call in a commercial electrician to help you, especially if the issue is with your home office.

Fixture Up

You’re going to need to be able to choose the right picture types. This can make or break your space and if you’re not careful everything could go off balance and down the drain.

The last thing you want is for your decorative efforts to be a bust. You want to make sure that things succeed and that you have lighting that makes you feel excited when you enter the room.

Always make sure that you are matching the fixtures to the size of the room. The last thing you want is a lighting fixture that completely overwhelms the room and feels like a “sore thumb” in the space. You can avoid all of this by making sure you get your proportions right.

There’s a lot you’re going to need to think about when you’re trying to get lighting right in your home. There’s something about getting the lights right that will “light up” something inside you.
