I’ve finally flipped out and got pink hair. I have wanted to do it since forever.
How I got Pink Hair
I bought a packet of BRITE ORGANIX Organix Semi Permanent Hair colour – Pastel Pink 75 mL for $8.75 and in 30 minutes, and much interest from my 15-year-old daughter who I think Snap Chatted the experience, I’m not sure. I now have pastel pink hair. Not sure how my conservative work environment will deal with it, but it’s not a mohawk or facial tattoo across the forehead, so should be fine.

I loved the verbage on the box. It’s written in a way that’s like a friend talking to you, designed to appeal to the teenager or early twenties. Says a lot about me that I still relate.
If you aren’t happy and want to break up with the colour, there is a remedy, involving baking soda. The packet wasn’t quite big enough for my long hair so I had to go and buy a second one after I missed the back a bit.

I used a beret to hide the missed spot while dodging around the aisles trying to be surreptitious and nonchalant about being a 47-year-old Mosman mum dying my hair pink. I will move through adolescence one of these days.
No, my hair didn’t look like the packet, because that’s obviously Photoshop hue saturation, dragged all the way to pink. No one has hair that colour to the roots. And if they did it would consist of hair extensions. Hair that is that long and bleached looks tortured and no amount of hair product or tool can disguise destroyed hair.
My hair looks cute though. Not sure how I’ll feel walking onto the ferry to get to work. It’s bad enough to have a walking stick until I can get a new knee, and look about 30 years too young for a stick, but now I am the lady with pink hair and walking stick.
Hindsight is 20/20
It took about 5 weeks to get the pink completely out of my hair. My lovely and patient hairdresser Ella had trouble hiding her disdain for the colour, as she is personally invested in all her clients’ hair, especially her blonde clients. I actually had fun not being just another Mosman mum with blonde hair. I felt cool and rebellious for a minute, but I realised that that feeling isn’t because of my hair. I loved just mixing it up, doing something new, interrupting the everyday. Perhaps that’s why people are drawn to tattoo. I am back to my blonde, which is showing more and more greys. When I go 100% grey I will celebrate that.
