What Buyers Hate The Most About Your Home

What Buyers Hate The Most About Your Home

Are you struggling to sell your home? If so, there could be a number of different reasons why this is the case. Perhaps you have not been available for viewings, and so your home has been difficult to reach? If that’s not the case, then maybe there is something wrong with your home? To help you discover whether this is the case, read on to discover some of the biggest property turn-offs for buyers.

  • Mess – Yes, your home is lived in! But that doesn’t excuse you. A messy home is not only extremely distracting, but it makes your home look much smaller than it is! Plus, if you can’t even clean your home for a viewing, the buyer may assume the general upkeep of the property is bad.
  • Loud / Busy Walls – You may love your red and white polka dot wallpaper, but there is no guarantee that the buyer will have the same taste as you! Stick to neutrals and tone down any loud/busy areas. Look at 30A Local Properties for some good inspiration regarding the best way to present homes for sale.
  • Unkempt gardens – Come rain or shine your garden needs to look beautiful! The outside of your property is the first thing that will be seen. A badly kept garden can ruin a viewing before it has begun.
  • Badly lit rooms – There is nothing more off-putting than a dark and dingy room! It makes the space look cold and uninviting. Plus, you fail to show off your home’s best features. The buyer won’t really see what your property has to offer.
  • Wall to wall carpeting – Most buyers won’t be a fan! Hardwood floors are a major selling point these days. It is always a good idea to rip out the carpet and show of the floor instead. Or, if you can’t do that, at least make sure you get them professionally streamed!
  • Poor DIY or building work – This is one of the biggest turn-offs for potential buyers! In fact, approximately 90 per cent of buyers said they would be put off by a home that required a lot of work.
  • Lack of privacy – Roughly every eight in ten people would think twice about purchasing a property if the garden lacked privacy. Plant some tall flowers or consider a fence!
  • Bad odours – Unsurprisingly, bad smells are a major turn-off, with a 75 per cent of people saying it would put them off. Ask a friend to come to your home and give it a sniff. Sounds silly, but often we become immune to smells if we are surrounded by them for such a long period of time.
  • Rude sellers Yes, the buyer isn’t buying you, but you are a representation of your home. No one is going to want to give you money if you behave in a rude way! 70 per cent of buyers said this would put them off.

So there you have it: some of the things buyers hate most about the homes they view. These statistics were taken from a Nationwide Building Society report. Hopefully, they have helped you to get to the bottom of where you are going wrong.
